VOCALS COURTESY OF BLACK OCTOPUS-SOUND: For more information you can visit their website at this link: 🤍 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FREE REVERB PLUGIN ISSUES: A number of plugins selected for this test required a lot of adjusting to get any semblance of a workable Reverb Hall out of them. I found the Dry v. Wet balancing was particularly problematic in nearly all of the reverbs on test. In a number of cases, even the slightest movement sent the vocals from foreground to background with very little in between. More expensive plugins don't have these kinds of issues. With the exception of the GlaceVerb, the models on test tended to sound marginally bright when compared with the Lexicon, which has a more rounded and softer tone. The solution here would be to roll off the high frequencies using Eq. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FREE REVERBS ON TEST LIST: 1) OldSkoolVerb: This reverb is quite popular with a number of folks. Of all the reverbs on test, it appears to be the best all rounder, and also seems to have a more dynamic range to it that shows up when using drums. I did find some of the controls a bit fiddly. 2) EpicVerb On first listen the EpicVerb has a very tight and commercial sound. The only negative point relates to some of the controls, which don't appear to do much to the overall quality of the Reverb. Nonetheless it has the fattest sound on test. 3) GlaceVerb I must admit this was a late entry to the test and has a nice warm sound and tail to it. However there is a caveat to this plugin that you need to be aware of. First, the Texture control when advanced does produce a delay effect that impinges on some subjects more than others. Personally I find it obtrusive when treating vocals. Secondly, to get rid of it, set the GUI Texture control to nearly off as shown in the video. The GUI is dimly lit but you can just about make out the setting point of the Texture control that I used. It seems to me this plugin is suitable for vocals or ambient music only. I found it tricky to get a good drum sound out of it, as it had no input or output controls to drive this instrument along. Having said that, boy does it sound good on vocals, predominantly in the head to head test with the Lexicon, though we did cheat a bit to achieve it. 4) Ambience I remember using this model some years ago, I think it has been around since 2003. It appears to be based on early hardware digital reverbs of the 80's. That said its performance is passable though its hard sonic qualities might not to be everyone's taste when it comes to vocals. On the other hand when we used it in the backing track test it put on a much better show, and is perhaps better suited for this function. 5) Classic Reverb: I found this plugin very difficult to get a decent sound for Voice. Once again the Dry v. Wet balancing in conjunction with the Damping control is very hit and miss. Some digital noise exists but I've heard worse. Essentially what is displayed here is about the best I could get out of it. Nevertheless when used in the context of a Backing Track test, it was a pleasant surprise. 7) Freeverb The Freeverb plugin has had a long history and the original DX version released in early 2000's was a really superb reverb that could challenge the Lexicon. It had a beautiful deep rounded tone. However as time rolled by the Freeverb fell by the wayside, this was due in part to the popularity of VST. In recent years several attempts have been made to revive it but for some reason they never sounded as good as the original version. Nevertheless this latest revision seems to be best of them. 6) TAL Reverb Not a bad little plugin and very easy to use. Like a number of reverbs on test it does occasionally generate digital noise artefacts. Conversely, it did the business when used in the backing track test where its ability to separate instruments in the mix happens to be one of its attributes.
