IPVS for Scaled Private Cloud Load Balancing [I] - Kimberly Messimer, Comcast VIPER In this talk, we discuss how Comcast VIPER addresses network-scaling bottlenecks using IPVS as a load balancer. We discuss the benefits including enabling us to achieve over 500Gbit/s egress from a modest Kubernetes cluster as well as dynamic VIP allocation. Using a tool we’ve written in-house called Kube2IPVS, which utilize Kubernetes config maps, we can assign an ingress IP address and port to a Kubernetes service, and our load balancer will automatically reconfigure, with no downtime, to load balance traffic into a service. We go into technical detail in this presentation, starting with a brief overview of IPVS and why it’s useful. We will then descend into the requirements surrounding L2 adjacency and why ARP is your frenemy. We’ll discuss how we addressed the challenges of running IPVS internal to Kubernetes, including IPVS master and backend co-location. Finally, we'll highlight how port forwarding is not possible using IPVS in direct-reply mode, and then discuss how Kube2IPVS manages iptables rules to route packets directly into Kubernetes service chains, effectively bypassing this restriction. I'm going to demonstrate how the same or even exceeding performance and feature set can be achieved using an open-source technology which has been a part of the mainline Linux kernel for over a decade – IPVS. Specifically, you'll see how IPVS can be used to automatically configure load balancing and routing for Docker containers using a simple Go daemon and a Docker plugin. Bypassing conntrack: Optimizing K8s Service By Enhancing IPVS with eBPF - Jianming Fan & Hong Zhiguo, Tencent IPVS mode is a commonly used load balancing strategy for Kubernetes Service. However, its performance is not ideal. It uses conntrack and iptables, both are too heavy for SNAT. To address this issue, a novel load balancer IPVS-eBPF is developed in Tencent. * IPVS is modified to bypass Netfilter, so it is more lightweight without conntrack and iptables * An eBPF program is attached to qdisc, performing SNAT as instructed by IPVS * IPVS updates the eBPF map upon connection creation and expiry Benchmark shows that, comparing to IPVS, IPVS-eBPF achieves 22% throughput gain in servicing TCP persistent connections and 64% throughput gain in servicing TCP short connections. This talk will first introduce a few existing load balancers for Kubernetes. Then the detailed design of IPVS-eBPF will be discussed, together with the technical challenges and some eBPF programming experiences. 🤍

Speakers: Dr. Anna-Barbara Moscicki, Professor of Pediatrics, University of California, Los Angeles & Prof. John Doorbar, Division of Virology, Department of Pathology, University of Cambridge, UK. Topic: Epidemiology studies have shown intermittent detection of the same HPV type occurs in some women. In addition, women that report celibacy have been shown to have incident infections. These observations have brought into question the role of latency vs new cervical infections from either a partner or autoinoculation. Data will be presented that show the strong association with sexual behavior and repeat detection. Clinical data shows that a positive HPV cervical cancer screening test preceded by a negative test is associated with very little risk of CIN 3+ suggesting these are new infections. However, this also suggests that if this is a latent infection, clinically it may not be relevant as well. Data will be shown that intermittent positive tests over prolonged periods, however, do represent risk of CIN 3+ in the rare case.

IPVS ECHO® is a telementoring platform offered to IPVS members to support their knowledge and amplify their clinical skills in the management of patients with HPV-related diseases. To achieve this, IPVS schedules regular multidisciplinary meetings with IPVS experts. The International Papillomavirus Society and the APAC HPV Coalition organised a joint webinar on 15th May 2021 on “Cervical cancer vaccination and screening in the Asia pacific during the pandemic: Where do we go from here?”. The aim of this webinar was to contribute to the goal put forward by the WHO for the elimination of cervical cancer global strategy. During this session, the panel of speakers identified main challenges in the Asia Pacific in cervical cancer screening and prevention in the COVID era to focus on towards achieving the goal. Recommendations for the Asia Pacific in terms of short-term and long-term actions were also made.
