Sometimes life throws you a curveball. We had just gotten done from a string of amazing shows, after which we holed up in a basement in hopes to come up with the best Karakoram material we possibly could make. Till life threw that curveball at us. At all of us. Rehearsals and studio sessions grind to a halt, as the whole world descends into chaos. Dark times indeed. What's it really like to fly at 7,000 m, crossing frozen mountains, soaring massive rockwalls and forging new cross country routes on a paraglider in the Himalayas? To find out, adventure filmmaker Alun Hughes joins high altitude paragliding star John Silvester on a tandem paraglider and goes 'col busting' in the Karakoram. Leaving the comforts of Snowdonia, UK, Alun embarks on a journey into the frozen world of extreme altitude paragliding. Installing themselves in Karimabad in the now fabled Hunza valley of the Karakoram Highway, Alun straps himself to the front of Silvester's tandem paraglider and together they commit themselves deep into previously unflown terrain. The footage they bring back from their adventure is nothing short of astonishing. This gripping adventure film documents not only an extraordinary pilot and the cutting edge of high altitude Himalayan paragliding, it also introduces a growing subculture of paragliding that has never been explored before. The Karakoram Highway , romanized: śāhirāh qarāquram; known by its initials KKH, also known as N-35 or National Highway 35or the China-Pakistan Friendship Highway) is a 1,300 km (810 mi) national highway which extends from Hasan Abdal in the Punjab province of Pakistan to the Khunjerab Pass in Gilgit-Baltistan, where it crosses into China and becomes China National Highway 314. The highway connects the Pakistani provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa plus Gilgit-Baltistan with China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The highway is a popular tourist attraction and is one of the highest paved roads in the world, passing through the Karakoram mountain range, at 36°51′00″N 75°25′40″E at maximum elevation of 4,714 m (15,466 ft) near Khunjerab Pass Due to its high elevation and the difficult conditions under which it was constructed, it is often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World.[3][4][5] The highway is also a part of the Asian Highway AH4.

The Karakoram Highway (KKH) runs from Kashgar in Western China to Islamabad in Pakistan, and isn't so much a highway as a 'high road'. It took a stunning 20 years to finish the road, and even today it continues to suffer from extreme weather and environmental disasters. The KKH runs through the highest concentration of soaring mountain peaks and raging rivers in the world, and is generally considered to be among the most spectacular areas on our planet. Traveling here isn't for the faint hearted, although transportation has improved significantly in the past decades. In October 2010 I had the chance to travel the Karakoram Highway. Although Pakistan had suffered its worst floods in recent history the same year, most parts of the road were still intact. Nevertheless, traveling the road proved a massive challenge and also a great adventure. As these events had scared off many tourists and travelers, I found myself among locals for nearly all of the time. Shigar region, which spans an area of 8,500 sq. km., is the entrance to the enormous Karakoram. On an old trade route from Central Asia, it is situated. Baltoro Glacier, which is 35 miles long, is at the head of the Braldo Valley. Shigar's own northern ridge climbs to a height of 28,265 feet, with the K2 serving as its summit. From Skardu, Shigar Valley is only a short drive away. It includes a sizable agricultural area and a number of alluring tourist attractions. Shigar River is used to irrigate Shigar's rich land. Fruits including grapes, peaches, pears, walnuts, and apricots are in great abundance there. This is Day 4 of our travel in Northern Areas of Pakistan. We started our journey from Khuiratta, Kotli Azad Kashmir and have covered many areas such as Mansehra, Naran, Kaghan, Jal Khand, Babusar Top/Pass, Chilas, Gilgit and Hunza. In this travel vlog, we take you from Gilgit to Rakaposhi and then to Attabad Lake. Our journey along Karakoram Highway led us to see some amazingly beautiful places in Pakistan. Tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan focuses on the mountains. Gilgit-Baltistan borders Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province to the west, a small portion of the Wakhan Corridor of Afghanistan to the north, Xinjiang, China to the northeast, the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to the southeast, and the Pakistani-administered state of Azad Kashmir to the south. Gilgit-Baltistan is home to five of the "eight-thousanders" and to more than fifty peaks above 7,000 metres (23,000 ft). Gilgit and Skardu are the two main hubs for expeditions to those mountains. The region is home to some of the world's highest mountain ranges. The main ranges are the Karakoram and the western Himalayas. The Pamir Mountains are to the north, and the Hindu Kush lies to the west. Amongst the highest mountains are K2 (Mount Godwin-Austen) and Nanga Parbat, the latter being one of the most feared mountains in the world. Three of the world's longest glaciers outside the polar regions are found in Gilgit-Baltistan: the Biafo Glacier, the Baltoro Glacier, and the Batura Glacier. There are, in addition, several high-altitude lakes in Gilgit-Baltistan. The Karakoram Highway is the major highway of Gilgit-Baltistan, which connects the region with the rest of Pakistan to the south and with China at its north end. It consists of Upper Hunza, Central Hunza, and Lower Hunza. Karimabad is the major city of the valley and has all facilities for mountaineers and tourists.[2] The popularity of the Hunza Valley and the amount of tourism there is due in part to its relative accessibility and proximity to the Karakoram Highway. Major tourist attractions in Hunza are: Attabad Lake - A major lake of Hunza Valley. It was created following a landslide at Hunza River near Attabad village on 4 January 2010. The resulting damming of the river caused the lake to slowly form, submerging several villages and displacing up to 6,000 people. Baltit Fort - An old medieval fort located in Karimabad. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hussaini Suspension Bridge - A long wooden suspension bridge over Hunza River near Husaaini village. It is sometimes referred locally to as the "Indiana Jones Bridge" It is termed as one of the most dangerous bridges in the world. Khunjerab Pass - At 4,693 meters, this is the highest border crossing in the world. It is also the only modern crossing on the China-Pakistan border. Most tourists visit on a daytrip from Hunza to see the border and then leave. The surrounding area is also a part of the Khunjerab National Park, which was set up to protect local, endangered wildlife, specifically the Marco Polo sheep. Rakaposhi is a mountain in north of Pakistan in the karakoram mountain range. It is situated in the Nagar valley in Gilgit Baltistan Attabad lake is also situated in Hunza Nagar. This video was my first ride north from Ghulkin to upper Passu which is only a small portion of the 1300 km long highway. I was totally blown away by the beauty, size, and diversity of the scenery there. Countless mountain peaks, glaciers, valleys, and the Hunza river. If you ever get the chance I highly recommend experiencing this place in person ! Best views will be on a motorbike because your views will not be obstructed by a roof of a car/bus.
