Amid the excitement of so many new and interesting camera models, one company has been left out of the discussion: Olympus. Unlike its main rival, Panasonic, it has stuck to the Micro Four Thirds sensor and not jumped on the full-frame bandwagon. And while it released the larger, more professionally oriented E-M1X camera, it didn't represent a major upgrade on the 2016 E-M1 Mark II model. This relies on several components - powerful images processing engine (Truepic IX), upgraded 5-Axis Image Stabilization unit and also a more powerful SSWF (SuperSonic Wave Filter) dust reduction on the image sensor. Olympus claimed that besides the increased resolution benefit, we also get about 2 stops cleaner images when shooting at high ISO settings up to 6400. There are also a few limitations when hand-held high res shot is being employed, and I am discussing them in this video. Are you an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III user wondering if it's time to upgrade? In this sponsored video by MPB, we take a look at how the OM System OM-1 compares to the E-M1 Mark III. The OM-1 has the same 20.4-million-pixel resolution as the E-M1 Mark III, but its sensor is a stacked backside-illuminated chip. This means that the pixels gather more light and the readout speed is faster, improving the camera's performance. The OM-1's TruePic X processor is 3x faster than the E-M1 Mark III's processor, resulting in better performance. The OM-1 has a significant jump in continuous shooting capability, going from 10 frames per second with continuous AF to 50 frames per second, and can shoot at up to 120 frames per second in sequential shooting or Pro Capture mode. The OM-1 also has dual UHS-II SD card slots, which is an improvement over the E-M1 Mark III. The OM-1 has a quad-pixel autofocus system with 1053 phase-detection AF points and 1053 contrast detection points, an advantage over the E-M1 Mark III's 121 of each type of AF point. The OM-1 is also equipped with AI-driven Subject Detection modes that can detect and focus on various subjects, including cars, motorcycles, aeroplanes, helicopters, trains, birds, and animals. The OM-1's video specifications have been upgraded compared to the E-M1 Mark III's, with the ability to record 4K 10-bit video at up to 60p and Full HD video at up to 240p. It also supports H.264 8-bit, H.265 10-bit, and Multi-Frame Rate recording of clips over 30 minutes in duration. The OM-1 can output raw video at up to 12-bit 4:4:4 to the Atomos Ninja V or Atomos Ninja V+. The OM-1's viewfinder has a resolution of 5.76 million dots, an improvement over the E-M1 Mark III's 2.36 million dots. The magnification is also greater, and the refresh rate has been boosted to 120fps. The resolution of the 3-inch vari-angle touchscreen on the back of the camera has also been increased from 1.04-million dots on the E-M1 III to 1.62-million dots on the OM-1. OM Digital has refreshed the OM-1's menu and Super Control Panel to make them clearer and better organized. There are also a few changes to the control layout, including the addition of an AF-ON button for back button focusing on the OM-1. The OM-1's weather-proof rating has been boosted to IP53, and it comes with a higher-capacity battery that CIPA tests indicate has a 520-image life, 100 more than the E-M1 Mark III's battery. Overall, the OM System OM-1 makes a comprehensive upgrade on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III, and even more so for owners of the older OM-D E-M1 and OM-D E-M1 Mark II.

These are not huge improvements but they are important updates that do impact real life practical shooting scenarios. The improvements include new audio recording hardware rectifying the "white noise" issue (previously in E-M1 Mark II when plugged in external microphone), upgraded time lapse capability up to 9999 frames and in camera time lapse movie up to 4K 30fps (previously 999 frames and 4K 5fps only), new fine tune C-AF behaviour and IS level settings for movie recording, and a few more. I believe at the time of this video publishing a lot of these features were not mentioned by any other reviewers out there yet. Olympus continues to unleash ever-more powerful micro four thirds cameras all the while the buzz continues to be bestowed on the full frame sensor giants. The Olympus EM1 Mark III made a great mistake. We'll do some tests to show it's glory. This camera was not designed for video shooters at all, you can't even save custom modes for video it's all photography based. But there are some seriously good hidden aspects that make this one of the best video cameras I've ever used. With a simple firmware update, Olympus could really give Panasonic a run for it's money for best video camera in micro four thirds loser land. Olympus have really hit the mark with the E-M1 Mark III. I'd expected another 'ho-hum, here we go again' reheat of the last model like the E-M5 Mark III, E-M10 Mark III or Panasonic's G90 or GX9. Good cameras but nothing 'must have about them' if you already have the previous model. The E-M1 Mark III is different, though. It retains everything good about the older model and adds only better things to the mix. And one item of special sauce is added - a fast, accurate, C-AF system that finally puts a Micro Four Thirds camera in the same focusing league as the Canon, Nikon and Sony. In doing so, given its compact dimensions and sheer all round capability, Olympus have come up with what, in my view, might be the best _all round_ camera available. Whatever the system.
